It doesn't look any different from most of the new invasive species on the island. Some canny person took a photograph and uploaded it online. More like a collection of vines than a bush. Other people saw it in other places, some reporting it, but everyone who did said seemed harmless. Compared to the plants that, for example, shot fire or acid or changing your brain chemistry, a plant that snagged at your ankles every now and again wasn't much to be concerned of. Just don't get into the 'cage' and odds are good you'll be fine.
The problem is, the plants moved.
Most people wouldn't notice at the beginning unless they touched it. Poking and prodding would lead to snagging. Screams muffled by vines firing bullet fast into your mouth. With their limbs restrained, the unfortunate person would be dragged inside the cage, and once restrained, the vines would shift, their roots allowing movement unimaginable to take their captive somewhere they wouldn't be found.
After a few victims, the plant grew bolder - tempting potential victims with fruit or captured friends - and in time, its vines spread over the island, capturing any it passed.
If only it craved flesh instead of sex...
